Famous Films About Alabama or Famous Alabamians:

This exciting movie about the current Submarine USS Alabama, has little to do with the State of Alabama, or the Crimson Tide, but we Alabamians are proud of it and its crew, just as we are proud of the Battleship Alabama, below, and the (then) young men who fought and died aboard her during WWII:

True story of the murder of District Attorney Albert Patterson by Gambling Interests*, and the trial, filmed on location in Phenix City, Alabama while the trial was in progress. Albert Patterson's son, John Patterson was elected Governor of Alabama soon after the release of this Film. *[Note: they're back--Alabama's last governor was a staunch supporter of state-sponsored gambling, and in spite of the overwhelming defeat of his "state lottery bill" in 1999, he ran for reelection in 2002 promising to once again reintroduce gambling. He was defeated by anti-gambling candidate, Bob Riley, by a few votes, but gambling interests still have strong influence the Alabama Legislature.]:

This Movie, a fictionalized History of old-time prison life and the (then) new method of execution which was to replace hanging, was filmed at the old Kilby Prison in Montgomery, Alabama:
The Traveling Executioner (Movie 1970)
Stacy Keach, Marianna Hill, M. Emmet Walsh, John Bottoms, Ford Rainey... /Movie
(Currently Not Available on Video)
One of the terms of filming at Kilby Prison, was that film's explosives experts were to demolish it. But, after 3 attempts to blow up the structure with enormous charges, they were simply not able to bring down many of its massive walls, which stood for many years after, like ruins of some huge and forgotten ancient Monument.
In spite of its somber genre, drab scenes of the real prison execution chamber and "Yellow Momma" (the official State Electric Chair), this film was a beautiful and authentic visual depiction of the early 1900s.
A newer Movie, although not filmed in Alabama, which rivals the scenic quality of "The Traveling Executioner," and with a similar story-line, is:
DVDThe Green Mile /DVD (1999)

Set in the Alabama Territory at the end of the Creek Indian Wars (1813-14), John Wayne plays a "Davy Crockett-Like" character (who fought in the Alabama Indian Wars for "Andy" Jackson), with Oliver Hardy of Laurel & Hardy fame playing his side-kick. Also mixes in the true facts of the 1817 settlement of Demopolis, Alabama by members of Napoleon's Court and French Officer Corp:

Alabama's William Barrett Travis and Tennessee's Davy Crockett died at the Alamo in 1836, fighting for Texas independence from Mexico. Crockett had risked his life earlier fighting in the Alabama Territory Creek Indian War (1813-14), which opened the land that 9 year old Travis's Family settled in 1818, and lead to Alabama Statehood in 1819:

John Wayne's Movie may never be surpassed as the ultimate Alamo Film, possibly having only one flaw -- the character-typing of W.B. Travis. Although brilliantly played by the much older Harvey -- (Click here to See Images of William B. Travis and Davy Crockett) Travis was noted to be witty and charming young man, liked by Crockett, and he was only 26 when he died at the Alamo.

Like many States, Alabama had volunteers with the original WWII Flying Tigers in China, and Gunter AFB at Montgomery, Alabama was headquarters for the Flying Tigers (aka 14th Air Force), until "absorbed" into the 1st Air Force in 1969. With only 29 P-40's, The Flying Tigers destroyed 2,000 Japanese supply boats, shot down 2,500 Japanese planes, killed 35,000 Japanese troops and destroyed 1,750,000 tons of Japanese shipping! This movie was made while America was still reeling from Japanese attacks at Pearl Harbor and the Phillipines...
