George "Goober" Lindsey was born at Fairfield, Alabama and grew up at Jasper, Alabama. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education from the University of North Alabama, and after an Air Force hitch, was the head football coach and a science teacher at Hazel Green School in Madison County, Alabama, before turning to acting. He has
 been actively involved with the Special Olympics in Alabama since 1971.
